At The Foundry, the world is our classroom. On any given day, students may be hiking in the mountains, hammering nails into a barn door for a retired veteran, collaborating on a song with classmates, creating a drone in the maker space, practicing disaster preparedness with CERT, designing a logo in graphic arts, projecting deer population in calculus, or creating an advertising campaign in English.
The opportunities are endless.
At The Foundry, students are encouraged to pursue their career dreams. If the path to that dream includes college, we help our students to do more than be accepted to their choice of higher education.
We prepare them for the rigors of their courses.
To help them in this endeavor, we have a two-fold approach:
1. Application Preparation
The Georgia Department of Education has developed a minimum list of courses needed to graduate from high school. At The Foundry we want more than the minimum; we want subjects that give our students the opportunity to sample different careers and find their passions. To that end, we offer classes from mechatronics, to finance, to graphic design, to creative writing.
Our students graduate with 30 or more credits (instead of the minimum 23) and, more importantly, they have had the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of real life subjects to prepare for college and their lives ahead.
2. Course Rigor
College Level Classes
Our subjects are taught by industry professionals who are experts in their fields. For example, our history teacher has worked as a historian on film projects, our math teacher is a mechanical engineer, and our finance teacher is a CPA and former VP of finance for Pinewood Studios.
Teaching skills are also vitally important. Most of our teachers hold advanced degrees and have taught at the school or college level.
They utilize project-based learning, Socratic seminars, and Harkness Tables to ensure students are ready for the advanced-level thinking expected in college.
We recognize the latest studies that show that AP courses are burdensome to students’ time and are no longer the best way to prepare for a college career. That is why The Foundry offers its students the opportunity to take dual enrollment classes at Clayton State University.
Dual enrollment holds the same weight for college admission as AP, is open to any student who has the minimum GPA and SAT score, and the HOPE Grant is available to pay for the courses.
These days, STEM has become something of a buzzword. At The Foundry, however, STEM means much more than science, technology, engineering, and math. We recognize that, no matter what career you pursue, technology skills are vital. That's why STEM is integrated into every class, for every student.
Whether a student is interested in being a physicist, a journalist, an engineer, or a filmmaker, The Foundry will provide the invaluable foundation of STEM necessary to be prepared for the future.
HUMANITIES & THE ARTS
The Humanities tell the story of the world, and The Foundry involves our students in the great works of the past and present to help them shape the future. Students learn important skills like graphic design, written and oral communication, creative expression, editing, and proofreading.
They are also engaged as critical thinkers who delve into projects that seek to answer big questions about our history, government structures, culture, economy, art and literature.
